With Demetriou now the award-winning creator, writer and star of an internationally acclaimed sitcom, it is hard to believe that those who turned him down don’t feel foolish for letting him slip through their grasp.īut it would be disingenuous to say that Stath Lets Flats, Demetriou’s baby, was ever an obvious hit. “I thought it was what I wanted to do, because I didn’t really know what options there were,” he tells NME.
In his teens, he auditioned for “every drama school” two years in a row and never got a single callback. But the story and the set-piece jokes – Stath enjoyed romantically cutting the hair of his colleague and “mayor of gentleman town”, Al (Al Roberts) – weren’t the draw.Jamie Demetriou says that when he was young, he was a rubbish actor. So began Stath’s quest to get a new “park time” job at his cousin’s barbers. While he could barely contain his excitement, it wasn’t exactly good timing – Michael and Eagle had been forced to relocate to his father’s (Christos Stergioglou) house and, until they convinced their landlords to stick with them and found another office, they couldn’t pay anyone. The show picked up nine months after the series two finale, with Carole (Katy Wix) about to give birth to Stath’s (Demetriou) baby at any moment. After a long break, its silly yet heartfelt return last night proved it’s still the daftest show on television.
